Though, it is a difference between watches, so not both of the processes are easy to be made. Starting with the vintage watches, you should know they are way easier to be polished. Try to do that to remove scratches which appear during time, or to buff it so it gets a beautiful shining. It is an easy task, but how about polishing mineral glass or sapphire crystals? They are usually found on contemporary watches, and this process is much more difficult.
The best decision you should make when dealing with this impediment is to leave if to a professional watchmaker. Sometimes, if not in all the times, glass and sapphire crystals need to be replaced with some new, shining ones.
Though, if you are facing with a vintage watch, then it should have plastic or acrylic crystals, which usually don’t provide you any headaches. Their removal is slightly easier from the case and their polishing too. In this case, the things you will need are: a jeweler’s loupe, case blade, small rubberized case ball or wadded duct tape, jeweler’s precision screwdriver, clean cloth, toothpaste and toothbrush and a cleaning polishing cloth.
Starting this easy process, you will be required to use the first item from the list. The jeweler’s loupe would be use to examine the crystal for any scratches. In case there are any, use your fingernails to determine its depth over the crystal surface. Next, use a case blade open the watch’s snap-back case. Try to remove the movement from the case you have already opened and using the jeweler’s precision screwdriver remove the screws. At this moment, you will be able to see the crystal and to pop it out using your thumb. Moving on to the next item, we find the clean cloth. In this process it will be used to remove any filth or dirt from the crystal and from the edges and corners. Also, using the toothbrush and the toothpaste, rub it onto the crystal for at least 5 minutes.
In case it is needed, repeat the process so that your watch will always look shining in the bright sun shines.
